Do you keep seeing these Wall Decal things everywhere but have no idea where to get them? Don’t know how to apply them or even if they are any good?
Here are some answers to common questions about Wall Decals that PAINTLESS design has shared with us about their very popular design product.
Q: What exactly is a Wall Decal?
A: A wall decal is a graphic that adheres to your wall. Depending on what kind of material is used in your wall sticker you can also apply them to windows, mirrors, furniture and even use them indoors or outdoors as they are 100% waterproof and UV safe.
Q: You said “depending on what kind of material is used.” What materials are used and what is better?
A: Well, there are a few things to look out for when choosing your wall decal and depending on what application you will be using them for will determine which kind you will want to use. But do note they are not all the same.
Vinyl – Vinyl wall decals have been used for 10′s of years in professional industries and this is where it really all started. Traditionally vinyl decals are used for car wraps and in vinyl signage. It is a great material because the colors are sharp, they are very UV ray resistant and 100% waterproof so you can still wash your car and it can sit outside in all weather. In those conditions your decals will last for 5-20 years depending on the quality of vinyl you purchase.
If you use the vinyl indoors as many consumers now do, they can last for 10 years easily without ever falling, peeling or fading.
Vinyl wall decals are in my opinion the highest quality of wall decal you can get. Although they adhere very well removal is still extremely easy on a wall surface because it is pores. As well, you can bend your graphic around 90 degree angles, cut them to fit around plug outlets, bend them around round surfaces and overall, are extremely easy to use. The final look is also the nicest as the material is paper thin so the graphic looks like paint when on the wall. Lastly, the amount of detail that you can get in a vinyl graphic is by far the greatest out of all material so the possibilities are endless.
Paper based – These are sometimes made from cardboard cutouts with glue on the back or are a mixture of paper and plastic. These can be found in IKEA wall decals and are very easy to use. Just grab and stick.
The issue with paper however, is they are not waterproof or UV safe so fading is an issue. The other thing is that because paper is involved the glue can often absorb into the product and the designs won’t stick for as long. Lastly, if you have a bend in your surface the paper isn’t as forgiving.
Plastic – These are wall stickers that we are all familiar with like the Winnie the Pooh and Princess stickers that have been used in kids rooms for years. Some are great and some are not. It really depends on the glue used and ingredients in the plastic.
There have been problem with the stickers not sticking for long before the edges curl over or fall off altogether. Others work great and don’t have this problem. It’s hit or miss. The one thing in common though is they will not have much detail in the design. Typically they will all be one piece or only have 2-3 pieces involved that you have to line up by hand.
Q: Easy? How easy are wall decals to apply?
A: Depending on how bit your wall decal is will determine how easy the graphic will be to apply for a new user. There are no messy liquids or glues to content with and no finicky details to line up like with wall paper or stencils. Quick, dry and simple.
Many “How To” videos that I have seen all make one huge mistake when trying to show new users how to apply the wall decals and that is they pull off the WHOLE sheet of backing paper. That’s silly and complicated and risks destroying your design by it accidentally folding back on itself. Once it does that you can’t save it and it’s garbage.
If you go onto YouTube.com and visit PAINTLESS designs video How To Channel then you will see the 1 step trick that saves you all this mess and complication. Once this one trick is used the chances of messing up your design is next to nothing and a complete amateur can apply any size wall decal to any surface.
One quick side note though, make sure your wall or surface is Dusted! Nothing sticks to dust and this is an easy way to mess up your design as well.
Q: What surfaces can I stick my Wall Stickers too?
A: The quick answer is anything that is smooth and taught.
Walls, windows, mirrors, finished wood furniture, finished metals, even painted brick, cars, patio furniture, the fridge, the shower door & walls, your bike helmet, laptop, toilet, etc, and even the kitchen sink. Plus because vinyl wall decals are waterproof they can stand up to steam and cleaning so even in your shower they will last for years and years.
Things they will not stick too and last are t-shirts, drapes, pillows and other fabric items. They can stick to a tightly woven canvas like material and do stick to banner material for signage VERY well. Just nothing that is too flimsy that moves a lot or that you will want to put in the wash.
